Dr. Clark will present the Clark and Well’s cognitive model of social anxiety disorder and teach this distinctive form of cognitive therapy they developed targeting mechanisms of persistent social anxiety. Excitingly, comparisons with other active treatments have established that their treatment is superior to many other treatments including traditional CBT.
The workshop will introduce several treatment components including a self-focused attention and safety behaviours experiential exercise, video-feedback, externally-focused attention training, behavioural experiments, and procedures (discrimination training and memory re-scripting) for addressing early traumatic experiences that influence patients’ current behaviour in social situations. All the treatment procedures will be vividly illustrated with case material and video clips. Dr. Clark will guide the audience on how to best select treatment components and monitor progress of patients.
Finally, the workshop addresses why other components of CBT are not used in their model based on their conceptualization of social anxiety and the mechanisms driving it.
